Taking your first Pilates class can feel a bit intimidating. You’ve heard all the buzz about how amazing Pilates is for your body—how it builds core strength, improves flexibility, and tones muscles—but you may not know what to expect when you walk into your first session. Looking back, there are a few things I wish I had known before that would have made the experience smoother and more enjoyable. Here’s my list of things to keep in mind before your first Pilates class!

1. It’s Not Just About Stretching

Before I took my first Pilates class, I thought it was mainly about stretching and light toning. But Pilates is much more than that! It focuses on small, controlled movements that engage your entire body—especially your core. While flexibility is a big part of Pilates, you’ll also be building strength, improving balance, and enhancing your mind-body connection. Don’t be surprised if you feel muscles working that you didn’t even know you had!

 2. Form Is Everything

Pilates emphasizes form over speed. I learned quickly that quality of movement is more important than quantity. You won’t be doing hundreds of reps, but you will be focusing on performing each exercise with precision. Pay close attention to the instructor’s cues, and don’t hesitate to ask for modifications if you need them. Trust me, getting the form right will help you get the most out of your Pilates workout.

 3. Your Core Will Be on Fire

 had no idea how much Pilates focused on core strength. Almost every move in Pilates requires engaging your core, which means you’ll feel those muscles working from the get-go. Don’t worry if your core feels sore after your first few sessions—that’s a good sign! Over time, you’ll notice improved posture and overall body strength as your core gets stronger.

4. Breathing Matters

Breathing is a huge part of Pilates, and it’s something I didn’t fully appreciate at first. The breath helps you control your movements and engage the right muscles. Your instructor will guide you on when to inhale and exhale during each exercise, which may feel a little strange at first. But once you get the hang of it, the breath will become an essential part of the workout, helping you power through challenging movements.

 5. It’s Low-Impact, But Not Easy

One of the reasons I was drawn to Pilates was because it’s a low-impact workout. I thought that meant it would be easy. Spoiler alert: it’s not! Low-impact means it’s gentle on your joints, but that doesn’t mean it’s not challenging. Pilates requires focus, strength, and control, and even though the movements may seem small, they pack a serious punch.

6. You Don’t Need to Be Flexible to Start

One of the biggest myths about Pilates is that you need to be super flexible to do it. I used to think I’d have to be able to touch my toes or do a perfect split to keep up in class. The truth is, you don’t need to be flexible to start Pilates—flexibility is something you build over time through practice. Your instructor will provide modifications for every level, so don’t stress if you’re not naturally bendy.

 7. Grip Socks Are a Game-Changer

I remember seeing people wearing those strange-looking socks with grips on the bottom and thinking, “Are those really necessary?” Yes, they are! Grip socks help you stay stable and secure on the reformer or mat, especially during exercises that require balance. They also help with hygiene in the studio. After trying a class with regular socks, I quickly invested in a pair of grip socks—and it made a world of difference!

8. You Don’t Need to Be Intimidated by the Reformer

If your first Pilates class is on a reformer, it can look a little intimidating at first. It’s a machine with springs, straps, and moving parts, but don’t worry—it’s not as scary as it seems! Your instructor will explain how to use it, and after a few sessions, you’ll feel comfortable adjusting the springs and moving through the exercises. The reformer is an amazing tool that helps you target muscles in ways you can’t on a mat, so give it a chance!

9. Your Instructor Is There to Help

One thing I wish I’d done from the start is communicate more with my instructor. Pilates instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and want to help you succeed. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or let them know if you’re struggling with a move. They can offer modifications or adjust your form to ensure you’re getting the most out of your workout without risking injury.

10. It’s a Journey, Not a Quick Fix

Pilates is a practice, and like anything worth doing, it takes time to see the results. While you may feel amazing after your first class, consistent practice is key to building strength, flexibility, and overall fitness. Don’t expect overnight transformations—embrace the journey and enjoy the process of improving each time you show up on the mat or reformer.
